That’s the feature-level breakdown. Now let’s see how they actually performed when we put them to the test.

Performance: 1000 - Lead Campaign Test Between Lemlist and Smartreach

Performance: 1000 - Lead Campaign Test Between Lemlist and Smartreach

Here’s the 1,000-lead campaign test show once things go live.

Smartreach clearly wins on inbox placement. With a 60.9% open rate, it beat Lemlist’s 36.5% by a wide margin, which usually points to stronger deliverability and cleaner inbox placement in this run.

And because the click rate is also higher (0.69% vs 0.4%), more people actually did something after opening them.

Lemlist shows stronger reply behavior once emails are read. Even with fewer opens, it pulled a higher reply rate (1.9% vs 1.19%), which suggests that when Lemlist emails do land and get read, the personalization and message style may connect better and nudge more prospects into responding.

Here’s the takeaway:

  • Smartreach leans toward visibility and inbox performance
  • Lemlist leans toward engagement and replies

No single test is the final verdict, but this one does surface a clear behavior pattern.

Smartreach seems to optimize for getting emails seen, while Lemlist appears to do better at turning attention into actual conversations.

Next, we’ll see how each tool handles campaign setup and execution behind the scenes.

Campaign Process and Management

Lemlist Outreach Process

1. Campaign Setup

Lemlist gives you two ways to start a campaign: an AI-assisted setup and a manual setup.

The AI helps you get a basic sequence in place faster, while the manual option is better if you want full control over the flow, messaging, and conditions.

Lemlist Outreach Process

I selected the manual setup and built the sequence step by step using email, LinkedIn actions, and task-based steps.

Lemlist Outreach Process

2. Template Creation

I started by adding an email step, which opens the template builder.

Lemlist Outreach Process

From here, you can mix automatic steps like emails and LinkedIn messages with manual actions such as calls or tasks, while AI tools help with writing and enrichment inside the same flow.

3. Sequence Building

Sequence building in Lemlist is straightforward; you add steps on a timeline, set delays between emails, and edit messages inline with personalization variables and AI support.

Lemlist Outreach Process

4. Campaign Flow Visualization

Each campaign is shown in the visual flow, showing the order of messages, delays between steps, and basic triggers.

Lemlist Outreach Process

You can adjust content or timing directly within the sequence view without switching between screens.

5. Lead Import & Enrichment

Leads can be imported from multiple sources and enriched during setup by filling in missing emails, phone numbers, and LinkedIn data, with options to verify contacts and avoid duplicates before launch.

Lemlist Outreach Process

6. Scheduling

Lemlist lets you control when campaigns run by setting specific days and time windows.

You can adjust or reuse schedules across campaigns to keep outreach consistent and within working hours.

Now let’s see how the Smartreach outreach process works, from campaign setup to managing sequences and outreach.

From the Campaigns dashboard, click “+ Create campaign” in the top right corner.

Smartreach Outreach Process

1. Campaign type

Smartrach gives 2 types of campaign setup:

  • Email-only campaign – Standard cold email sequences for focused outreach
  • Multichannel drip campaign – Combine email with other touchpoints like calls and LinkedIn steps based on prospect actions

2. Add prospects

Smartreach offers flexibility here with six different ways to add prospects to your campaign.

3. Build your email sequence

Smartreach gives you two paths: build everything manually with full control, or let their AI generate a complete sequence based on a few inputs.

4. Set up your sending infrastructure

Connect your sending account by adding a new or existing account.

Smartreach Outreach Process

The channel settings menu on the left gives you control over everything:

  • Unsubscribe Text/Link – Decide what appears at the bottom of your emails: nothing, a plain text unsubscribe message, or a clickable unsubscribe link.

There’s also a toggle to automatically add anyone who unsubscribes to your “Do Not Contact” list.

  • Additional Settings – Control email priority (whether to prioritize opening emails or follow-ups) and toggle click tracking and open tracking on or off, depending on your deliverability strategy.
  • Global Sending Limits – View the maximum number of emails allowed per prospect per day and per week. If you need to adjust these caps, there’s an “Edit global limits” button right there.
  • Content Preferences – Choose whether to append previously sent emails at the bottom of follow-ups, so prospects see the full conversation thread.
  • Spam Test – Run a domain health check before launching. This screen shows your campaign’s spam risk status (though it’ll display “No Email Accounts Found” until you’ve connected your inboxes).

5. Campaign Timing

Smartreach lets you configure when emails go out.

You can enable smart timezone detection, so prospects receive messages during their business hours.

6. Review and launch

Before sending, you land on a preview screen showing your sequence steps, the sending account, and a live preview of how your email renders for individual prospects.

AI-Powered Personalization

Lemlist

AI-Powered Personalization

Lemlist has AI in both the campaign builder and the template library, so personalization isn’t a separate step.

If you choose “Create with AI,” Lemlist can draft a full outreach sequence by subject lines, email copy, and follow-ups—based on a short prompt or lead context. It also supports common variables (like {{firstName}} and {{companyName}}) and keeps the format consistent across channels such as email and LinkedIn.

For deeper customization, Lemlist’s personalization engine can pull from enrichment fields (job title, company details, location) to add more relevant lines per prospect. You can also layer in extras like dynamic images or landing-page elements from the same editor.

All of this is backed by a central template library, which makes it easy to create, reuse, and update personalized templates across campaigns, especially if multiple people are working in the same workspace.

Smartreach

Smartreach integrates AI at two stages of the campaign workflow: one for generating complete sequences, and another for refining individual email steps.

AI in Email Editor

Smartreach brings AI directly into the email editor, so you can draft messages without jumping between tools.

It can generate the core pieces of a campaign at subject lines, email copy, and follow-ups based on a short prompt plus a few audience details.

AI-Powered Personalization

I tested it by clicking “Write with AI.” Smartreach then asked for a handful of practical inputs.

AI-Powered Personalization

Subject lines have their own AI option.

You can set basic preferences like length, capitalization, and style, and it generates variations you can pick from.

AI-Powered Personalization

I tried both the email-copy AI and the subject-line AI. Overall, the output was solid as a starting draft, but it still needed a bit of editing to match my voice and tighten the pitch.

AI Assisted Campaign

Right at the content stage, Smartreach lets you kick things off with an AI-assisted setup instead of writing everything manually. You fill in a short prompt about who you’re targeting, what you’re offering, and the tone/number of follow-ups you want, then Smartreach generates a ready-to-edit sequence.

AI-Powered Personalization

Once it’s created, the platform lays out the opening email and follow-up steps in the campaign view with draft subject lines and copy already in place.

From there, you simply review each step, tweak the messaging, and adjust timing/variants before moving to launch.

Deliverability & Email Warm-up Performance

Lemlist

Lemlist keeps deliverability tools inside its own workspace, with Lemwarm available as part of the broader Lemlist ecosystem. From the same dashboard where you manage campaign assets, you can also manage your sending setup on warm-up, inbox rotation, and basic domain health checks without needing an external warm-up tool.

That said, the number of sender inboxes you can connect and scale with may still feel more limited compared to higher-volume platforms like Saleshandy.

Smartreach

Smartreach gives you a clear, centralized view of all connected email accounts in one place. Each inbox is listed with key details upfront, including email provider, sender ownership, send/receive status, daily sending limits, and DNS checks for DMARC, DKIM, and SPF.

Deliverability & Email Warm-up Performance

Email Warm-up (WarmupHero integration)

Email warm-up, however, isn’t handled natively inside Smartreach. Instead, it’s managed through an integration with WarmupHero.

You access this via Settings → Email Warm-up, which redirects you to the WarmupHero dashboard.

Deliverability & Email Warm-up Performance

From there, inboxes need to be added separately, and warm-up must be manually activated for each sender account.

Deliverability & Email Warm-up Performance

Once connected, you toggle warm-up on per inbox inside WarmupHero. It does the job, but the experience feels slightly disconnected since warm-up lives outside the main Smartreach interface.

Value for Money

Lemlist Pricing

Lemlist uses a per-user pricing model, with plans centered around outbound rather than raw volume. Even on lower tiers, you get access to core features like AI-powered personalization, email warm-up, inbox rotation, and multichannel outreach.

Lemlist Pricing

Hidden Costs & Limitations

Lemlist’s limitations are more straightforward but still worth noting:

  • Per-user pricing adds up. Costs increase linearly as your team grows.
  • Inbox limits per plan. The number of sending inboxes is capped depending on your tier.
  • Advanced features are bundled into higher plans. Multichannel depth and scaling flexibility improve significantly on the Multichannel Expert plan.

Now let’s look at Smartreach.

Smartreach Pricing

Smartreach, on the other hand, positions itself as more volume- and agency-friendly at the entry level.

Smartreach Pricing

Hidden Costs & Limitations

Smartreach includes many features upfront, but some costs only become clear as usage grows:

  • Credits play a big role. Prospecting, enrichment, and AI features rely on Smartreach credits, which can deplete faster than expected on active campaigns.
  • Email warm-up isn’t native. Warm-up runs through WarmupHero, which means a separate flow and potentially extra cost outside Smartreach.
Lower tiers are tightly capped. Active prospects, warm-up accounts, and AI usage are limited unless you move up plans.
  • Agency features scale with price. Client dashboards and higher prospect limits are locked behind Pro and Scale tiers.
  • Support prioritization favors higher plans. Advanced support and priority handling are reserved for top tiers.
  • There’s no free plan, only a free trial. Paid plans start at $39/month, but a meaningful scale usually requires upgrading.

If these trade-offs don’t work for your workflow, it’s worth looking at other alternatives.

FAQs

1. Can agencies use Lemlist, or is Smartreach a better fit?

3. Can I use AI to write cold emails in both Lemlist and Smartreach?

Yes, both platforms offer AI-powered email generation. Smartreach provides AI assistance at two levels: full campaign sequence generation and individual email refinement.
