An SPF checker, or SPF record checker, is a tool that validates whether a domain has correctly published Sender Policy Framework (SPF) records in its DNS. It analyzes the SPF records of a specific domain for syntax, structure, and logical errors. This helps figure out if SPF records exist and/or are configured correctly to protect the domain from being falsely used in email spoofing.

SPF works as a security guard for your domain reputation. It ensures that any email messages claiming to be from your domain are exactly that. If a spammer attempts to use your domain to send fraudulent emails, SPF checks and brands those as fakes, protecting your domain’s credibility.

An SPF lookup refers to the process of checking a domain’s SPF record. This record is stored within the domain’s DNS records. Essentially, it’s a way to cross-check if a particular email claiming to come from your domain was indeed sent from an authorized server. By examining the SPF record, mail servers can verify the authenticity of incoming emails, thus helping to prevent email spoofing.

You can check if SPF is configured correctly for your domain using Sparkle’s SPF check tool. You simply input your domain into the tool, and the tool will run a check on your SPF record. It monitors your authentication setup, including DMARC record and DKIM checks, in real-time and will send alerts if any issues or errors are found.

SPF record’s syntax is the standard format and rules that SPF records must adhere to. It’s comprised of a TXT record with a version tag, mechanisms that specify which IP addresses are authorized, qualifiers to specify how messages should be handled, and optional modifiers for additional information. Proper SPF syntax is key in ensuring mail servers correctly interpret your SPF policy. An example SPF record looks something like this: “v=spf1 include:_spf.domain.com ~all”

SPF PermError (Permanent Error) occurs when the SPF record for a domain is invalid or cannot be processed correctly. This typically happens due to:

  • Too Many DNS Lookups: SPF has a limit of 10 DNS lookups; exceeding this can trigger a PermError.
  • Syntax Errors: Incorrect formatting or missing elements in your SPF record.
  • Multiple SPF Records: A domain should have only one SPF record; having more can cause the receiving server to decline it.
  • Invalid Includes: If an included domain has errors or exceeds lookup limits, it can break SPF validation.
